Praised as a “voluminous soprano” (South Florida Classical Review), award-winning lyric soprano Mary Claire Curran is known for her charismatic stage presence and sparkling high notes. Her performance history reflects her versatility in opera, new music, musical theatre, cabaret, and recital repertoire.
Recent performances and accomplishments include her role and company debut singing Musetta in Opera Wilmington’s La bohème where Taminophile reviewed “...Musetta was beautifully sung by young Mary Claire Curran.” Her recent performances in New York City include singing the closing number in a benefit concert featuring Broadway stars and Tony Winners in Project Shaw’s ”Shaw Songs” at The Players Club in Gramercy Park, and premiering scenes from Matthew Evan Taylor’s new opera The Warrior’s Wives in the West Village. In 2017, Mary Claire was a grant recipient of the Anna Sosenko Assist Trust, was chosen as an Opera America Career Blueprints recipient and was the winner of the Rohatyn Great Promise Award from the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Eastern Region. In 2019, she served as a judge for the Classical Singer Competition in Chicago. Before the pandemic struck, she was planning an NYC cabaret show with musical theatre actress, Sophie Amelkin, titled Opposites Attract.
Mary Claire has performed as a solo artist at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Broadway’s Symphony Space, Marc Sorca Hall at The National Opera Center, and L.A.’s Marina Stage at the California Plaza. As a singing actress, she sang Tamara in Rubinstein’s The Demon, Erste Dame in Die Zauberflöte, and Janice in the world premiere of Charles Norman Mason’s Entanglements at the Lowe Art Gallery in Miami. Before transitioning to soprano repertoire, her mezzo performances included Hansel in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel and “With One Look” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, both with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. When not singing opera, Mary Claire loves showcasing her flair for musical theatre, performing her thoughtfully programmed cabaret shows including her special St. Patrick’s Day cabaret show, “Kiss Me, I’m Irish!”
Mary Claire is an active volunteer with Sing for Hope, serves on the Board for the Metropolitan Opera National Council, Eastern Region and is a graduate of Harvard Business School’s online Entrepreneurship Essentials and Sustainable Business Strategies certificate programs. In February 2020, she formed her own creative communications firm, Muse Media Services.
